3 Day Tour around the Cederberg
Clanwilliam, Bidouw, Wuppertal, Prince Alfred’s Hamlet, Ceres and Wellington
- Clanwilliam (one of the oldest towns in South Africa) is about 3½ hours from Cape Town. On the way, we pass through Citrusdal and the citrus plantations. We spend the night at the new Clanwilliam Lodge or, for a real wilderness experience, a stay at Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness Reserve can be arranged.
- A side trip to the Bidouw Valley (renowned for its spring flowers) can be made in August and September.
- On to Wuppertal which is a most attractive little oasis in very rugged country. In this village, velskoens (felt shoes) are still made, tobacco is dried and worked into rolls, and rooibos tea is sorted and packed.
- From Wuppertal, a gravel road leads south through rugged and sandy country and, eventually at Majieesrivier, joins the road from Algeria to Ceres. This road requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle.
- Dropping down the Gydo Pass, Prince Alfred’s Hamlet is spread out below with Ceres beyond. This is an important dispatch point for fruit and agricultural produce for the whole of the Ceres Valley. We overnight in Ceres, which was devastated by an earthquake in 1970.
Driving home, we pass through Wellington, the magnificent Limietberg range of mountains and the spectacular Baines Kloof Pass. This Pass provides one of the most glorious scenic drives in South Africa. We arrive back in Cape Town at about 16h00.
