Travel Tips for Tourists
Weather
Warm and sunny weather most of the year round but especially between October and April. Strong winds can blow in the summer months but very little rain falls. June, July and August are our winter months when it can be cold and wet but there are frequent beautiful days too. Always pack some “be safe” clothing!
Medical and Health
Excellent private medical facilities and many overseas visitors come to Cape Town for their plastic and dental surgery. Tap water is safe to drink in all SA cities. Be aware of HIV AIDS. Please do take out travel and medical insurance before your trip.
Currency, Credit Cards, Tipping & VAT
The South African rand is the currency and foreign exchange bureaux and ATMs are plentiful. Major credit cards are accepted at most outlets except petrol stations (here you need a dedicated garage card). Tipping is at the rate of 10% or more in restaurants and you would give R5-R10 or more to a porter. VAT of 14% is applied to all purchases. This can be claimed back on your departure by producing your invoices with the purchases at the airport.
Safety & Security
Please always be alert and aware, as is necessary in many cities in the world. The Waterfront itself is particularly safe at all times. Most of Cape Town’s inhabitants are happy to see tourists visiting because they know it helps the economy and ultimately themselves
Electrical Appliances, Mobile Phones and Telephones
South African electrical plugs are 3-pin round and adaptors are readily available. We have a 220-240 Volt a/c system so equipment made for 110 Volt d/c will need a transformer. A roaming facility for your mobile phone will enable you to use it here too. Public phones are available – some using coins and others Telkom prepaid cards. For an international call, dial 00 followed by the international code.
Accommodation
Every possible kind of accommodation is available in Cape Town and the internet will help you here. The peak season is between November and February when there might be less choice.
